Magdalen College Crest

Magdalen College

Magdalen is home to truly beautiful surroundings as well as a real community. Addison’s Walk and the Deer Park offer a perfect break from the library and there’s always something happening around college.

Food

Hall serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. There are 3 main course options served (one is vegetarian). Breakfast is about £2.50. Lunch and dinner in hall cost about £3.50. Every student pays a £200 catering charge each term and can redeem £150 of this. The Old Kitchen Bar also serves light lunch options. The JCR shop sells all sorts of snacks and is perfect for a mid-essay sugar fix! Formal hall is entirely optional. You can choose to attend one of three formal halls a week that cost £7 - £10.

Accommodation

Magdalen offers accommodation for all years of study. In first year, every student is randomly allocated a room in the Waynflete building or in one of our High Street houses. Both are extremely close to college. In second year, you choose your room by random ballot. As everyone pays the same rate, your room is determined completely randomly. Most second and third years choose to live in college, and you can often choose a room near your friends. There are some en-suite rooms and plenty of kitchens.

Extracurricular

Magdalen has a huge variety of societies to get involved in. There’s also the chance to try a variety of sports in a very relaxed environment. The Magdalen Players, the college drama society, put on a garden play every summer. There’s an orchestra, a Music Society that organises recitals and Open Mic nights, an amateur choir, and a choir made up of choral scholars. The Stokesley Society also regularly organises discussions with guest speakers.

Welfare

There are three JCR welfare representatives and a team of Peer Supporters who are always on hand to talk about any worries you may have. Our welfare reps also run our Welfare Teas and Welfare Pizza, which give you a chance to forget about work and catch up with friends.

Entertainment

The college bar plays host to 3 bops a term. It sells very cheap drinks, including the latest cocktail that Nick (our barman) has concocted! In Trinity term, the JCR throws 2 garden parties. Magdalen also hosts a ball every three years.

Magdalen has a wide range of societies that are very inclusive and accessible to all levels of ability. I have loved playing in the college orchestra and the badminton team.
Louisa, Chemistry, 3rd year
Being at a big college means I’ve been able to meet lots of people and there’s always someone around to have fun/procrastinate with. Our bops are also great!
Elle, Law, 3rd year
Magdalen’s top teaching facilities make it easy for you to get whatever you want from Oxford life; the friendly and progressive JCR makes it a great place to live.
