Christ Church is one of the largest and grandest colleges at Oxford. Although its reputation precedes it, there's a very friendly and inclusive atmosphere. With five quadrangles, the college houses Oxford’s cathedral and backs onto the beautiful and picturesque Christ Church meadow.
The food at Christ Church is amongst the best and most reasonably priced in Oxford. While there are "tea points" dotted around college, there are no kitchens and so each meal is served in the Great Hall (of Harry Potter fame), creating a great community atmosphere. Breakfast, lunch, and brunch at the weekends are served on a rolling basis, costing around £3 per meal, and the three course dinner is paid on a termly basis, coming to just £2.38 per meal! Informal and formal sittings take place every night, though our twice-termly Guest Dinners are a foodie highlight. Options are also available for most dietary requirements.
All 450 undergraduates are guaranteed college-owned accommodation for the duration of their degree. Most first and third years live on-site, with the majority in en suite rooms. Over half of the second year students live in college-owned flats, a ten-minute walk away, with kitchens and a shared bathroom – a chance to live more independently. Of the second year students living in college, most live in "sets" – two bedrooms joined to a lounge – with a friend. After first year, rooms are chosen according to a random ballot, which prioritises academic merit.
Our sports ground – just across the meadow – is one of the best in Oxford, with tennis courts, rugby pitches, and an astro turf. With the river right on our doorstep, it's a great way to involved in rowing, and we host the annual intercollegiate Christ Church Regatta. Our college punts offer the perfect excuse to take a relaxing trip up the Isis. Not only that, but we also have an art room and music room.
We have a dedicated student-run welfare team, who organise weekly welfare teas and late-night tea breaks, offering the perfect opportunity for a friendly chat with student peer supporters who are trained by the counselling service. We also run events such as yoga and massages nearer exam time. Another Christ Church perk is free cake offered to students, and sweets from the "Welfairy" – an excuse to live up to our Alice in Wonderland roots where, in the words of the Mad Hatter: “it’s always tea time”.
With two entertainment reps, there's plenty to keep students occupied. Our JCR is always bustling with events to give everyone a break from work – such as petting zoos, film nights, cathedral concerts, garden plays, and twice-termly cheesy fancy-dress parties! Our college bar has recently been refurbished, and the college Commemoration Ball takes place every three years – a highlight for many during their time here.
I still get tingles down my spine just thinking about Christ Church. The magnificent architecture combined with the great college community makes it somewhere I never want to leave.
What I like about Christ Church is the cheap meals and guaranteed accommodation for all your time here. It saves you money, and helps you to make friends quicker!
Christ Church offers a great mix of history, community, and endless opportunities. Each person can maximise their enjoyment and achieve at their highest level.
